After an extra long vacation in Kentucky and Branson, plus Memorial Day, it was good to be back at work this week. It’s been kind of busy because we have a major grant in the works that my coworkers and I have been putting together. With large grants, it’s both exciting and nerve-racking, and I really hope that we’re successful.
With regard to my outfit, the day I wore this I was looking for something easy that wouldn’t necessarily indicate how many cheat days I had while on vacation (pizza, doughnuts, pancakes, chocolate, tons of Starbucks, and not very much physical activity – what can I say, it was a good vacation!). Enter: my friend the flowy blouse. During the last couple of seasons J.Crew has offered a number of tops with extra long silhouettes, and I have to say that I LOVE them. They’re really versatile, you can wear them untucked over pants, tucked in with high-waisted skirts, or layered under sweaters and jackets. Here are some of my favorites right now: endless shirt (want), endless shirt in stripe (have this one), long cotton-linen boy shirt, short-sleeve popover shirt (really want this one), and classic silk blouse in key print (this one is on sale!).
After my sister’s graduation last weekend, we spent the week in Branson with my family. Except for the fact that the weather was kind of abysmal on a number of days, we had a great time. This outfit was from a day of hanging out with my husband and my sister while my brothers and parents were out golfing. We played putt-putt, went shopping at the outlet mall, and made a Starbucks run.
Most of the week was pretty casual, and the best way to do casual for me (in a chic way that does not involve sweatpants, of course) involves grabbing my favorite jeans & tee. I was pretty averse to the boyfriend jean trend for a long time due to the fact that most of the pairs I tried on did not fit very well. What can I say, I’m a curvy girl and most of the pairs I attempted to dawn previously were tight on my hips and thighs, which kind of defeats the point of the boyfriend silhouette. Finally, this pair from Banana Republic came to the rescue. They have the perfect level of bagginess and distress, and they are extremely comfy. I highly recommend them for any weekend outing or casual vacation extravaganza.
Hope you had a great Memorial Day Weekend and that your short work week will be a good one!
First, let me say I am so proud of my sister. (Let the record show that I am proud of all my brothers and sisters, but obviously it was my sister’s special weekend). She graduated from the number one high school in the nation, Gatton Academy, where students complete their last two years of high school and their first two years of college simultaneously. They also leave home (at 15!) and live on a college campus. While there, she had the opportunity to study abroad, participate in various extracurricular activities, and present research at a professional conference. I’m not gonna lie, I totally teared up as she walked across the stage, with a mixture of pride and emotion. She has such a bright future ahead.
An added bonus is that she looked totally adorable doing it! I wished I dressed as well as she does when I was in high school. The only thing I wish I could have changed about the day was that it was SO humid, we both ended up with fluffy and frizzy hair. You KNOW it’s humid outside when my hair gets fluffy. Otherwise, it was a beautiful weekend spent with my family honoring my sister and all her hard work and accomplishments.
P. S. If you ever find yourself in Bowling Green, Kentucky looking for a place to eat breakfast, you MUST go to Wild Eggs. Actually, I think it’s a chain restaurant, but let me just say their pancakes were huge and fluffy and amazing.
I was out the other day wearing this outfit to lunch with a dear friend, a lady who I owe so much to and who, is really more like a mom to me. We had lunch at a cute little new spot in downtown Little Rock called Samantha’s Tap Room. I ran into like 10 people I knew, which was fun and it reminded me how much I used to like working downtown. Anyway, looking at these pictures now I wish I would have cuffed my sleeves or something to give the outfit a little more dimension and visual interest. I will keep that in mind for sure the next time I wear the top.
After lunch I went over to my good friend Jen’s house and got my hair did! (Side note, my grammar-nazi husband HATES when I say that phrase, which makes me laugh and say it more frequently. . .) She trimmed and styled it with some curl, which is great because, if you know me or have been following my blog at all, my hair pretty much does one thing: straight. But, if you are in Central Arkansas and you need a hairstylist, I highly recommend my friend Jen!
Hope everyone’s work week was productive and that your weekend is fun!
When I first grabbed this shirt dress out of the closet yesterday morning I was thinking of throwing on a blazer, but the denim jacket was really the vibe I was going for. It’s a little wrinkly from sitting at a desk all day (sorry!), but I really like it. For weekends I would totally wear it with sneakers or my Sperrys.
Also, hey, it’s summer break! I turned my last paper in on Friday. Thank goodness gracious. I am very much looking forward to reading what I want and NOT writing any papers for the next three months. And Happy Belated Mother’s Day to all you lovely moms out there, and best of luck to anyone who is graduating over the next few weeks. My sister is graduating from high school and I can’t wait to celebrate it with her. Hope your summer is off to a great start!
