Another long shirt! I was doing some online shopping last weekend, and J.Crew was having a great sale. I found this shirt, and I HAD to have it. I really enjoy leaving it untucked, but no matter if you don’t. The beauty of its length is that you can wear it with anything – tucked or untucked – including all sorts of skirts and pants.
This week I’ll be working on some new grant projects and planning for a couple of trips coming up this summer. Meanwhile, I’ll be daydreaming of being outside because it’s been gorgeous and very hot. I LOVE the summer time.
Hope you are enjoying the weather where you are, too!
Today I had a meeting and a lunch celebrating a dear friend who is a professor and just received tenure. I wanted something that looked nice but was also easy to throw on. Let me just say, it doesn’t get any easier than an LBD that essentially has a built-in statement necklace. The look seems kind of dressy for day, perhaps, but a. who cares and b. I think I mitigated the dressiness by wearing flats.
The dress I’m wearing is old from Banana Republic, but here are some other options available right now:
I love the shape, pattern, and length of this skirt. I already wore it once for the blog, which you can see here. I love how versatile it can be in terms of what color or style of top you can wear with it. It basically functions like a neutral.
By the way, I was thinking the other day, reflecting on a job I used to have. It was my first job right out of college. It wasn’t a place I had expected to work, but it was the perfect opportunity at the perfect time. I graduated on a Saturday and started working the following Monday. The type of work I was doing also seemed to fit perfectly with my interests. I knew all along I’d wanted to pursue a graduate degree and I’d thought that I was just getting the job temporarily until I was ready to go back to school.
When I actually got the job, however, I decided to open myself up to the idea that it might actually be a place where I could develop a career. Eventually though, I realized that I didn’t enjoy working there and that I did want to go back to school.
Which is pretty much a short way of describing how I ended up where I am today, working on a concurrent Masters in Public Administration and Juris Doctorate all while interning at a local municipality. What I did wrong at that previous job, however, was not doing my best while I was there. Looking back at my experience there now, I wish I had done a better job learning new skills such as working with social media and blogging, and honing others, like writing press releases and other types of news stories. Ultimately, what I would advise other people to do is, if you find yourself at a job that you don’t plan on staying at forever, you should still try to find ways to make the most of your experience. Learn everything you can and make sure that when you look back, even if you didn’t love the job, you can still say you gave it your best.
After an extra long vacation in Kentucky and Branson, plus Memorial Day, it was good to be back at work this week. It’s been kind of busy because we have a major grant in the works that my coworkers and I have been putting together. With large grants, it’s both exciting and nerve-racking, and I really hope that we’re successful.
With regard to my outfit, the day I wore this I was looking for something easy that wouldn’t necessarily indicate how many cheat days I had while on vacation (pizza, doughnuts, pancakes, chocolate, tons of Starbucks, and not very much physical activity – what can I say, it was a good vacation!). Enter: my friend the flowy blouse. During the last couple of seasons J.Crew has offered a number of tops with extra long silhouettes, and I have to say that I LOVE them. They’re really versatile, you can wear them untucked over pants, tucked in with high-waisted skirts, or layered under sweaters and jackets. Here are some of my favorites right now: endless shirt (want), endless shirt in stripe (have this one), long cotton-linen boy shirt, short-sleeve popover shirt (really want this one), and classic silk blouse in key print (this one is on sale!).
After my sister’s graduation last weekend, we spent the week in Branson with my family. Except for the fact that the weather was kind of abysmal on a number of days, we had a great time. This outfit was from a day of hanging out with my husband and my sister while my brothers and parents were out golfing. We played putt-putt, went shopping at the outlet mall, and made a Starbucks run.
Most of the week was pretty casual, and the best way to do casual for me (in a chic way that does not involve sweatpants, of course) involves grabbing my favorite jeans & tee. I was pretty averse to the boyfriend jean trend for a long time due to the fact that most of the pairs I tried on did not fit very well. What can I say, I’m a curvy girl and most of the pairs I attempted to dawn previously were tight on my hips and thighs, which kind of defeats the point of the boyfriend silhouette. Finally, this pair from Banana Republic came to the rescue. They have the perfect level of bagginess and distress, and they are extremely comfy. I highly recommend them for any weekend outing or casual vacation extravaganza.
Hope you had a great Memorial Day Weekend and that your short work week will be a good one!
